Veteran's Day

Hey friends!  Today I wanted to share a sweet book that could be used to discuss Veteran's Day.  The Wall by Eve Bunting is about a little boy that visits the Veterans Memorial with his father.  The little boy's dad lost his father when he was his son's age.  They look for the name of the little boy's grandfather.  While they are there they see flowers and notes along the wall.  The little boy wishes he could have known his grandfather, but is proud that his grandfather was a hero!  After reading this book my class creates cards that I send to the Paralyzed Veterans of America every year.  My students always get a thank you from them!
I also do a handprint flag, which  always turn out ah-dorable!  Click here for the link! :)  What do you do for Veteran's Day?

  1. I read this book today and I had the kids make the hand print flag. THANK YOU for the FANTASTIC ideas! We even got to add some geography to the lesson because the kids wanted to know where the wall was. Perfect!
THANK YOU AGAIN for the fabulous ideas!

  4. What a neat hand print flag. I've never seen anything like that before! How do you do that?

I came here from the "Teaching Blog Addict" site because this is a great idea for our Linky Party too this week. The theme is 'Veterans Day' this time.

Would you like to add your post to our site? We're somewhat new, yet getting good traffic already and ranking very well for the search engines.

We'd love to host your 'link' there this week too!

  7. I love the handprint flag! We make handprint calendars as Christmas gifts for parents and I was just commenting that I was surprised that we didn't have something patriotic for July. This would be PERFECT!!! Thanks for sharing. Love The Wall. It is a fantastic book! :) I have a couple of other books posted on my blog. Would love for you to stop by and check them out.
